The Unior Freewheel Remover is designed for Shimano-pattern freewheels with a 4-spline engagement.
Freewheels predate cassettes and remain in use. This tool fits the most common freewheel pattern, including Sachs, SunRace, and pre-cassette SRAM freewheels that share the Shimano spline geometry. It features the same back-end format as the modern cassette-lockring family, with a 24 mm wrench flat plus a 1/2" drive on the opposite face.
The Shimano freewheel pattern is found on many bikes, including vintage road, touring, classic mountain, and fixie conversions built on freewheel-style hubs. The tool also serves current-production singlespeed and BMX setups that use the Shimano pattern. The removal workflow is similar to the cassette workflow, though a freewheel threads onto the hub as a single unit. The tool engages the freewheel and turns counter-clockwise.
Old freewheels can be stuck, so the break-free torque can be high. A 1/2" breaker bar, 46cm (18") or longer, provides the necessary leverage. Penetrating oil on the freewheel-to-hub interface can also assist.
