Trek Fuel EXe: The Evolution Of E-MTB

The all-new Trek Fuel EXe marks the beginning of a new E-Bike era. Lightweight, nimble and playful, it’s one that’ll satisfy the purists and E-MTB enthusiasts alike – an out-and-out trail bike that just so happens to have a cutting-edge motor built right in. The EXe is the future of E-MTB.

Having received our first Fuel EXe in-store, we took a closer look at it to find out what all the fuss is about.

TQ Motor

The star of the show is undoubtedly the game-changing TQ motor.  TQ are relatively new to the E-MTB world, but with many years of experience in aviation, consumer electronics and even space travel, they have burst onto the scene with this lightweight, powerful, efficient and near-silent motor. Let’s delve into the details.

Small But Mighty

Hitting the scales at just 1.85kg, the discreet TQ mid-drive motor is up there with the lightest options out there – integrated neatly into the frame, it’s almost impossible to tell that it’s an E-Bike from a distance thanks to the small form factor. Despite its size, the TQ motor packs a punch, boasting a whopping 50Nm of torque with next to zero drag – hauling yourself up double-digit inclines has never been more fun!

Quiet As A Mouse

Trek has invested some serious time into developing this motor with TQ to maximise power and torque, while simultaneously reducing the sound it generates by fine-tuning its tonality. The science behind it may be slightly beyond us, but what we can tell you is that out on the trails it works a treat! Other than the feeling in your legs, you wouldn’t know the motor is there – it’s just you and the crunch of the leaves beneath your tyres.

All-Day Battery

Believe it or not, the Fuel EXe’s sleek frame houses an impressive 360Wh integrated battery. Capable of offering 2-5 hours of fully-assisted riding, or 3-7.5 hours when used with their 160Wh range extender, it does so all while keeping weight to a minimum – all-day adventures, here we come!

Total Integration

Sleek, slick, smooth, stylish: it should come as no surprise that Trek and TQ have gone the extra mile to make the total system a seamless experience. From the top-tube mounted integrated display to the up-front handlebar controller and even the mobile app, everything about the Fuel EXe screams quality. This makes the EXe a joy to use and to look at – what more could you ask for?

Trail Tech

Ultimately the Fuel EXe is a trail bike, and in that regard, it doesn’t disappoint in the slightest. With an array of capable components at the cutting edge of MTB tech, we’re confident in saying that the EXe would be up there with the best in the trail bike category regardless of whether it had a motor or not! The same can’t be said for many E-MTBs out there.

OCLV Mountain Carbon

Trek’s OCLV Mountain Carbon has long been the golden standard when it comes to carbon construction MTB frames. Perfectly blending remarkably low weight with strength and stiffness, the EXe is super responsive and doesn’t miss a beat, yet is comfortable and confidence-inspiring. Carbon Armour is strategically placed on the downtube and chainstays to protect it from wayward rocks and roots.

Trail Bike Geometry

Built with Trek’s tried and tested trail geometry, the Fuel EXe features a slack front-end courtesy of a 65-degree headtube for confidence and control, while the steep seat tube puts the rider in prime position to squeeze out as much power as possible on steep, punchy climbs. Thanks to the compact nature of the TQ motor, the EXe’s chainstays are just 440mm in length, maintaining the nimble and playful ride that a trail bike should have.

Trail Travel

With 150mm of travel at the front and 140mm at the rear, it’s safe to say that the Fuel EXe has plenty of squish at its disposal. Blurring the line between full-blown downhill and dedicated XC racer, this balance of low weight and high travel ensures the EXe remains nimble and responsive on technical inclines without sacrificing grip and control on fast and gnarly descents.

All The Accoutrements

Complete with a 12-speed groupset, clutch-equipped rear mech and a TranzX dropper seatpost, the all-new Trek Fuel EXe truly is an E-MTB to be reckoned with. If you’re looking for a futureproof E-MTB that rides, looks and sounds like a trail bike should, look no further!
